Windows Server 2019 is Microsoft's server operating system released in 2018, built as the second version based on the Windows 10 platform after Windows Server 2016. It's designed to help organizations bridge on-premises environments with Azure services, enabling hybrid scenarios that maximize existing infrastructure investments while modernizing applications through containers and microservices.

This release introduced several standout capabilities, including Storage Migration Service for simplifying server migrations, Storage Spaces Direct and Storage Replica for resilient storage architecture, and System Insights, a predictive analytics feature that uses machine learning to forecast resource needs based on usage patterns. It also added Windows Admin Center as a browser-based management console, replacing many older in-box administration tools with a single unified interface.

Windows Server 2019 is available in three editions to match different organizational sizes. The Essentials edition suits companies with up to 25 employees and comes with memory limitations. The Standard edition fits organizations with more than 25 employees or those running more than one server to separate server roles, while the Datacenter edition is the most complete option, built mainly for placing multiple virtual machines on a single physical host and including exclusive features like Shielded Virtual Machines, Storage Spaces Direct, and Software-Defined Networking alongside unlimited server virtualization.

The platform also introduced meaningful security improvements, including improved Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection and Shielded Virtual Machines that now support Linux guest operating systems in addition to Windows VMs. For customers running Linux tools alongside Windows workloads, Windows Server 2019 also includes the Windows Subsystem for Linux and built-in OpenSSH support.

Licensing follows a per-core model for Standard and Datacenter editions, with separate Client Access Licenses required for users or devices connecting to core server services. Mainstream support for Windows Server 2019 ended January 9, 2024, with extended support continuing until January 9, 2029, so organizations still running this version have official patching coverage for the near term.
