Windows Server 2016 Essentials is Microsoft's entry-level server operating system, designed as a flexible and affordable solution for small businesses with up to 25 users and 50 devices. It's positioned as an ideal first server, though it can also serve as the primary server in a small multi-server environment.

This edition delivers a simplified Windows Server Essentials Dashboard that streamlines everyday administrative tasks, including server configuration, user account management, backup management, and cloud service integration. It also supports Anywhere Access, giving external clients secure remote access through VPN or a remote web access portal, along with connector software for setting up Windows and Mac client computers.

Licensing works differently than Standard or Datacenter editions. Rather than being based on processor cores, Essentials uses a per-server license model, and it does not require separate Client Access Licenses for its supported limit of 25 users and 50 devices. The server license does not include rights to add or run virtualization instances, though the Hyper-V role is supported, allowing the edition to also function as a virtualization host if needed. If Remote Desktop Services is enabled, separate RDS CALs are still required.

This edition suits small business owners and IT administrators managing modest file sharing, printing, and application needs, without requiring dedicated IT specialists to configure complex virtualization or clustering setups. Activation typically uses a standard product key tied to a single server license.
