MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is a first-person mech combat simulator developed and published by Piranha Games. It launched on PC on December 10, 2019, reached Steam in May 2021, and is also available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

Set in the BattleTech universe in the year 3015, you pilot giant BattleMechs in missions that mix ground combat, base assaults, and escorts. Destructible environments let you level buildings, while component damage means arms, legs, and weapons can be shot off.

Between missions, you run a mercenary company. You hire pilots, buy and repair mechs, customize loadouts in the MechLab, and choose contracts from factions across the Inner Sphere while managing money and reputation.

The story campaign follows a quest for revenge after your father's death, and a career mode offers open-ended play. Up to four players can team up in PvE co-op, and several expansions add new mechs, regions, and campaigns.

Each mech has a distinct feel based on its tonnage, from fast light scouts to slow assault mechs with heavy firepower. Heat management, weapon groups, and armor distribution matter as much as aim, and salvage from missions feeds back into your growing hangar.

It suits BattleTech fans and players who enjoy slower, tactical vehicle combat combined with management and customization.

Which version should you buy?

• PC: PC keys usually activate on Steam. The game needs about 80 GB of storage and an internet connection for co-op.

• Consoles: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Series X|S codes redeem on PlayStation Network or a Microsoft account.

• Expansions: DLC such as Heroes of the Inner Sphere and Rise of Rasalhague needs the base game. MechWarrior 5: Clans is a separate game.
