Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak is a real-time strategy game developed by Blackbird Interactive and published by Gearbox Publishing. It released on January 20, 2016 for Windows PC, with a macOS version also available.

Set before the original Homeworld, the game moves the series from space to the sand seas of Kharak. You command a massive land carrier that acts as a mobile base, building and repairing units as your fleet crosses the desert.

Terrain shapes every battle. High ground improves weapon range and line of sight, dunes block vision, and the tactical sensors view lets you manage the whole fleet from a strategic map. Units and resources carry between campaign missions, so losses have lasting consequences.

The story campaign follows the Coalition of the Northern Kiith on an expedition to find a mysterious anomaly, opposed by the zealous Gaalsien faction. Skirmish battles against AI and online multiplayer are also included.

Unit variety ranges from light scouts and assault vehicles to heavy railguns, support units and aircraft launched from the carrier. Resources such as salvage and artifacts are collected across each map, and research upgrades improve weapons, armor and speed. Many missions reward planning routes through dunes and canyons rather than charging straight at the enemy. The art direction and soundtrack echo the original games, and the story connects directly to the events that start the Homeworld saga in space.

It suits RTS players who enjoy fleet management, tactical positioning and the Homeworld universe's story.
