Set in 1979 during the height of the Cold War, Xenonauts tasks you with managing the "Xenonauts"—a clandestine, globally funded task force created to neutralize an escalating alien threat. Unlike modern cinematic adaptations, Xenonauts embraces a deep, simulation-heavy layout. If an alien dropship lands in a highly populated country and you fail to respond, that nation’s panic levels will spike, eventually causing them to cut off your funding and sign a non-aggression pact with the invaders.
By purchasing a Xenonauts digital key, you get access to a game with two core gameplay layers. On the strategic Geoscape, you manage real-time air combat, build out hidden installations, direct research streams to reverse-engineer alien plasma weaponry, and manufacture advanced armor for your troops.
When your interceptors shoot down a UFO, you transition to the tactical isometric ground combat grid. Here, every move relies heavily on Time Units ($TU$), cover mechanics, line-of-sight calculation, and directional armor tracking. Your soldiers are completely mortal—there is no magical revival system. If a rookie takes a plasma bolt to the chest, they are permanently dead, leaving behind their equipment and forcing you to train raw recruits to fill the ranks. Compare prices below to see where you can grab a cheap key and test your strategic mettle.
Punishing Turn-Based Ground Combat: Manage strict Time Unit allocation to coordinate complex tactical maneuvers, secure flanking positions, and carefully deploy smoke or flashbangs to survive alien ambushes.
The Global Geoscape Sandbox: Establish multiple operational bases across continents, fine-tuning your regional coverage to intercept UFOs and manage funding nation panic levels.
Real-Time Interceptor Air Combat: Take direct control of your fighter wings in a real-time-with-pause air mini-game, matching human jets against superior alien flight patterns.
Deep Alien Reverse-Engineering: Dissect captured alien specimens and salvage crashed hulls to climb a massive tech tree, moving your squad from standard bullet-firing ballistics to advanced laser, plasma, and mag weaponry.
Xenonauts: Community Edition ($X:CE$): Modern Steam and GOG keys natively give you access to the community-engineered branch, which integrates years of crucial engine optimization, bug fixes, and smarter enemy AI subroutines.
Flawless Low-Spec Performance: Due to its clean, hand-drawn 2D aesthetic, the game runs beautifully on virtually any hardware configuration, including budget laptops and handheld PC frameworks.
