The Outlast Trials is a first-person psychological survival horror game that pivots the series toward a cooperative, live-service model while maintaining the core "hide-or-flight" gameplay that defined the original titles.
Era of Distrust: Set in 1959 at the height of the Cold War, players are "Reagents" trapped in the Sinyala Facility. You must navigate through themed environments like the Police Station, Fun Park, and Orphanage while being hunted by "Prime Assets"—twisted executioners like Mother Gooseberry and Leland Coyle.
The Project Relapse System (2025/2026): For veteran players, the Project Relapse update allows you to reset your character at max level in exchange for permanent, powerful upgrades and abilities that persist through future runs.
A Living Horror World: Murkoff provides "Rigs"—technological devices that allow you to heal allies, see through walls, stun enemies, or lay traps. These are essential for surviving the increasingly complex "Variators" that change the rules of each trial.
Seasonal Evolution: As of early 2026, the game has entered Season 5.1: Advent of Bogomolova, introducing new MK-Challenges, limited-time events, and a "Join-In-Progress" feature to make grouping with friends easier.
Cooperative Stealth: Work together to solve puzzles and distract enemies. Coordination is key, as noise and light are your greatest enemies.
Character & Cell Customization: Create your unique Reagent and decorate your personal sleep room—your only safe haven in the facility.
Rigs & Amps: Customize your loadout with active Rigs (Stun, Blind, Heal, X-Ray) and passive Amps to fit your specific playstyle.
Environmental Interaction: Use the environment to your advantage by locking doors, hiding in lockers, or using trash to distract pursuers.
Deep Lore: Collect hidden documents to uncover the dark history of Project Lathe and Murkoff’s connection to the events of the later Outlast games.
