RPG Maker XP is a Windows game-development tool for building original role-playing games without requiring specialist programming knowledge. First released in 2005, it is the oldest title still available in the RPG Maker series and introduced a front-view, turn-based battle system where the hero’s party appears on-screen alongside enemies. It also added three map layers, full-colour PNG support with alpha-channel transparency, and game data encryption for finished projects.
A key feature of RPG Maker XP is the Ruby Game Scripting System (RGSS), which lets advanced users rewrite core engine behaviour using Ruby-based scripts, while beginners can rely on the included sample graphics, sounds and map tiles to start a project quickly. Because it is an older, lightweight engine compared with newer entries like RPG Maker VX Ace, MV or MZ, buyers should compare features and system requirements to choose the right edition.
