RPG Maker 2003 is a Windows game-creation tool built for making retro-style role-playing games without needing any coding skills. It was the first entry in the RPG Maker series to use a side-view, third-person battle system, in contrast to the front-view combat found in most other RPG Maker titles, making it a popular choice for fans of classic early-to-mid-90s RPGs.
Everything in the engine, including characters, enemies, skills and equipment, is managed through a point-and-click database, while an event system handles messages, character movement and player choices without scripting. The engine ships with a selection of 16-bit default graphics and MIDI-style audio, and it supports importing custom sprites, tilesets, battle animations and MP3/WAV/MIDI tracks. Finished games can be exported as portable files that run on any Windows system, and commercial release is permitted provided the creator holds the appropriate rights to all included assets.
