Roadwarden is an illustrated text-based role-playing game developed by Moral Anxiety Studio and published by Assemble Entertainment. It launched on September 12, 2022 for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and a Nintendo Switch version followed on August 25, 2025.

You play as a roadwarden, a lone traveler hired by a merchant guild to explore a remote peninsula. Your job is to guard travelers, connect isolated villages, help merchants, and deal with creatures, bandits, and the undead along the way.

The game blends RPG systems with visual novel and interactive fiction design. Isometric pixel art illustrates each location, while most actions happen through written choices. You manage hit points, supplies, and simple survival needs, and some quests must be completed before in-game time runs out. Careful planning of routes, rest, and food keeps your roadwarden alive on longer journeys.

At the start, you choose a background as a warrior, mage, or scholar and decide your character's beliefs and attitude. The developers describe a story campaign of around 30 hours, with dozens of characters, side quests, and secrets about the true nature of the land.

Roadwarden is a single-player game. It suits readers who enjoy interactive fiction, players who like grim fantasy worlds, and anyone who wants a slower RPG where dialogue matters more than reflexes.

Which version should you buy?

• PC, Mac, and Linux: Roadwarden keys usually activate on Steam, which covers Windows, macOS, and Linux.

• Nintendo Switch: Switch codes are redeemed on the Nintendo eShop, so make sure an offer is not a Steam key.

• Language: The game is text-heavy, and the Steam version is available in English only, so strong English reading skills help.

Before you buy, check the activation platform and region on each offer, then follow our guide on how to activate your CD key. For more details, see the official Moral Anxiety Studio website.
