Set in 1622, Nioh 3 follows Tokugawa Takechiyo, the grandson of Ieyasu, as he faces a coup led by his younger brother and a demonic yōkai army. The narrative takes a supernatural turn as Takechiyo transcends time, traveling through the Heian, Sengoku, and Bakumatsu periods to alter history and preserve his legacy.
The "Open Field" Evolution: Unlike the mission-select menus of previous games, Nioh 3 features massive open zones. You can explore war-torn villages, ancient shrines, and the ominous "Crucible" at your own pace, discovering side quests and hidden secrets organically.
Dual-Style Combat: For the first time, you are not locked into one build. Players can seamlessly swap between Samurai Style (focused on stances, precision, and Ki management) and the new Ninja Style (emphasizing speed, aerial mobility, and "Mist" clones) with a single button press during combos.
Historical & Mythological Fusion: Encounter a massive roster of historical figures like Hattori Hanzo, Saito Fuku, and Minamoto no Yoshitsune, while battling fearsome new yōkai inspired by Japanese folklore and even Lies of P-style mechanical designs.
Ninja Style Mastery: A completely new way to play that utilizes trick-based offense and evasive "Mist" dashes instead of traditional Ki Pulses.
The Portal System: A modernized UI and hub that streamlines gear management and world navigation.
Expedition Co-op: Explore the open fields with up to two friends in a seamless online multiplayer mode.
Stone of Penance: A returning fan-favorite mechanic (added in the April 2026 update) that allows you to increase game difficulty in exchange for better loot rarity and accessory upgrades.
Katana Engine Tech: Built on Team Ninja’s proprietary engine, featuring improved lighting, volumetric effects, and support for modern Frame Generation technology.
