Metaphor: ReFantazio is a fantasy role-playing game developed by Atlus's Studio Zero and published by SEGA. It was released on October 11, 2024 for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X|S. The game is directed by Katsura Hashino, known for Persona 3, 4, and 5.
The story takes place in the Kingdom of Euchronia after the king is assassinated. A magic decree declares that the next ruler will be chosen by the people in a Royal Tournament. You play a young man traveling with a fairy companion named Gallica, trying to lift a curse on the prince while campaigning to win the throne.
Battles combine two styles. Weaker enemies can be cleared with quick real-time attacks in the field, while tougher fights switch to turn-based combat where exploiting weaknesses earns extra turns. Party members use Archetypes, a class system with dozens of roles that unlock new skills as you grow.
Time management also matters. A calendar tracks each day, and you choose how to spend your free time between quests, dungeons, and Followers, companions whose bonds strengthen your Archetypes and Royal Virtues. Metaphor: ReFantazio is single-player only.
The game won Best RPG, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction at The Game Awards 2024. It suits fans of Persona-style schedules, deep turn-based battles, and long fantasy stories with political themes.
