Developed by Almost Human Games, an independent Finnish studio, Legend of Grimrock revitalized the "old-school" RPG genre upon its 2012 release. Moving through a 3D-rendered, grid-based dungeon in real-time, players manage a party of four characters—chosen from different races and classes—to survive a series of increasingly difficult floors. The game focuses heavily on environmental puzzles, secret switches, and tactical combat where movement and positioning are just as important as your gear. Its success led to a critically acclaimed sequel and a recent 2024 expansion to the Nintendo Switch.
Classic Grid-Based Movement: Navigate a complex 3D dungeon one square at a time, staying true to the spirit of 90s classics like Dungeon Master.
Real-Time Tactical Combat: Face off against giant spiders, skeletons, and ogres using a unique rune-based magic system and timing-based attacks.
Brain-Teasing Puzzles: Overcome devious traps, hidden pressure plates, and logic puzzles that require sharp observation and wit.
Deep Party Customization: Mix and match Humans, Minotaurs, Lizards, and Insects across Fighter, Mage, and Rogue classes.
Dungeon Editor: Build your own custom dungeons or download thousands of fan-made adventures via the Steam Workshop.
Old-School Mode: For the ultimate challenge, disable the auto-map and draw your own maps on grid paper as you explore.
