Kao the Kangaroo is a 3D action platformer developed and published by Tate Multimedia. It was released on May 27, 2022 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. It is a fresh start for the Kao series, which began in 2000, so no earlier game is needed.

You play as Kao, a young kangaroo who sets out to uncover what happened to his missing father. Along the way he picks up a pair of magical boxing gloves that turn into his main weapon. Each world is a hub with several linear levels built around jumping, climbing, rolling, and light puzzles.

Combat is simple to learn: punch combos, a dodge, and a special attack that charges as you fight. The gloves gain elemental powers as the story goes on, which you use both in battle and to open new paths. Levels hide coins, letters, runes, and other collectibles, and coins buy costumes and extra hearts in shops.

The game is single-player only. The tone is light and colorful, with jokes and bright environments inspired by late-1990s and early-2000s platformers, while boss fights at the end of each world test what you have learned.

Kao the Kangaroo suits younger players, families, and anyone who misses classic collect-a-thon platformers but wants a shorter, easy-going adventure.
