Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is a third-person action-adventure developed and self-published by Ninja Theory, the UK studio behind Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and DmC: Devil May Cry. It launched on PC on August 7, 2017. Set in the Viking age, the story follows Senua, a broken Celtic warrior who travels into Helheim to fight for the soul of her dead lover.
The game blends close-quarters sword combat with environmental puzzles that ask you to read the world through Senua's perception, such as finding rune shapes hidden in the scenery. Ninja Theory worked with neuroscientists and people who experience psychosis to portray Senua's mind, and the voices she hears are recorded in binaural audio, so headphones are strongly recommended. The 2021 Enhanced update added DirectX ray tracing, NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR support, full controller remapping and color blindness settings. It holds a Metacritic score of 83 on PC.
It suits players who want a focused, single-player story with strong audio design rather than a long open world. A Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice CD key is a low-cost way into the series before moving on to the sequel, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II. Full details are on the official Hellblade website.
Viking-Age Psychological Story: Follow Senua, a Celtic warrior, on a vision quest into Helheim to save the soul of the man she loved.
Binaural Audio: The voices in Senua's head are recorded binaurally and move around you, which makes headphones the best way to play.
Perception Puzzles: Find rune shapes hidden in the environment and shift perspective to open paths forward.
Weighty Melee Combat: Fight Norse enemies with light and heavy sword attacks, dodges, parries and a focus ability that slows time.
Researched Portrayal of Psychosis: Ninja Theory built the story with neuroscientists and people with lived experience of psychosis.
2021 Enhanced Update: Adds DirectX ray tracing, NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, improved materials and optimized performance on PC.
Accessibility Options: Adjustable or automatic combat difficulty, full input remapping, subtitle styling and color blindness filters.
