God of War is an action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was released on April 20, 2018 for PlayStation 4, and a PC version followed on January 14, 2022. It is a soft reboot that moves the series from Greek to Norse mythology.

Years after his war against the gods of Olympus, Kratos lives quietly in the North with his young son, Atreus. When his wife dies, the two set out to scatter her ashes from the highest peak in the realms. Along the way, they face Norse gods, monsters, and Kratos' own past.

Combat uses an over-the-shoulder camera and focuses on the Leviathan Axe, which Kratos can throw and call back to his hand. Atreus supports you in fights with his bow, and you upgrade gear, runic attacks, and skills as you progress. Puzzles and hidden areas reward careful exploration.

The world opens up as the journey continues. You travel across the Lake of Nine and into several of the Nine Realms, with optional side quests, hidden chests, and tough Valkyrie fights. The game is presented as one continuous shot with no camera cuts.

God of War is single-player only and suits players who enjoy weighty melee combat, a strong story, and semi-open exploration. Its direct sequel is God of War Ragnarök.
