Children of Morta is a story-driven action RPG developed by Dead Mage and published by 11 bit studios, the team behind Frostpunk. It released on September 3, 2019 and holds a Metacritic score of 82 on PC. Instead of one hero, you guide the Bergsons, a family of guardians who must hold back the Corruption spreading across the land of Morta. A narrator ties each run to the family's story of love, loss and sacrifice.
The game blends hack-and-slash combat with a rogue-lite structure. Dungeons, caves and wilds are procedurally generated, with two to four levels ending in a unique boss. There is no permadeath. Experience upgrades individual characters and the family as a whole, and you can swap members between runs. Seven heroes are playable, from John's sword and shield and Linda's archery to Lucy's fire magic and Apan's healing. Local and online co-op are available in both Story and Family Trials modes. The hand-painted pixel art with frame-by-frame animation is shown on the official Children of Morta website.
