Baldur's Gate is a story-driven, party-based role-playing game originally developed by BioWare and published by Interplay Entertainment, released in December 1998 for Windows and macOS, and set within the Forgotten Realms campaign setting of Dungeons & Dragons (using the AD&D 2nd Edition ruleset). The game follows a customisable protagonist (the "ward" of the wizard Gorion) as they flee the Candlekeep library after a mysterious attack, uncovering a conspiracy tied to their mysterious parentage and the god Bhaal, Lord of Murder, while recruiting a diverse cast of companions and navigating the political intrigue of the Sword Coast region.

The original release offered over 75 hours of gameplay across its main campaign and the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion, featuring 11 playable character classes, dozens of subclasses, and a branching narrative shaped by player choices, companion relationships, and moral alignment. In 2012, Beamdog released the Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, a remastered version that preserved the original story and mechanics while adding modern refinements including widescreen support, improved UI, three new recruitable companions (Dorn Il-Khan, Neera, and Rasaad yn Bashir), new player voice sets, and an optional arena mode for tactical challenges. The Enhanced Edition also fixed numerous bugs from the original release and added cross-platform support for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, making it accessible to a broader audience of classic RPG fans. Buyers comparing a Baldur's Gate CD key should verify whether they are purchasing the original 1998 release (now largely obsolete) or the Enhanced Edition, which is the actively supported and widely available version on modern storefronts like Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store.
